Simple & Effective Web Design Client Questionnaire
July 10, 2009
Recently I constructed my first client questionnaire to help identify needs and begin work on a new website design. Feel free to copy and adapt my questionnaire to your needs, although I’d love for you to comment if you do!
Resources Used
- 46 Questions for a Web Design Project - provided the starting point for my questionnaire
- How to Extract the Facts with a Web Design Client Questionnaire – great article on Freelance Switch explaining why you should ask certain questions
Because I had visited the 46 Questions page first, I already had many questions and was just looking to expand, so from the Freelance article I visited the other resources they suggested at the end of their article. These gave me more ideas of questions to add, especially because I wanted to ask about actual design elements.
The Questionnaire
Site Goal
What is the primary goal of your web site? (sales, information, etc.)
Site Audience
Who is your target audience or demographic?
What primarily will your audience be trying to achieve or receive from your site?
Existing Site Information
Has any work already gone into the site? If yes, should this work be included at all costs?
Will we be doing a redesign of the site or mainly from scratch?
Do you own or have paid hosting, domains, servers, etc. that would be needed for the site?
Site Project Details
What is the deadline?
Does the launch coincide with a specific product or service being offered?
Are you concerned about competition? If so, who are your competitors?
Who will approve the purchase of further necessities?
Who will create the content?
What content will need to be updated and how often?
Site Branding, Design & Content Considerations
Do you have existing brand elements (logo, business cards, letterhead, etc.) that need to be incorporated or that can be provided as brand representation?
Will you be using exisiting brand colors, or what have you considered for a color scheme and/or theme?
What type of content will you be offering? Text, images, audio, video?
From visiting your competitors websites, or those in a similar field, what are some aspects you like and would like included on your site?
In addition to the Home Page, what will be your other content pages? (About Us, Services, Products, Press Release, Blog, Links, Location, Contact Us, Directions, Site Map, etc.)
If you enjoyed this resource, please share with others!

When do you usually send your clients the questionnaire? Right after the initial consultation or once you get an idea of their budget?

I actually send as soon as they indicate interest in my website services. That way they realize what information is needed to create one. I feel it’s an educational tool as much as an information gathering tool – many people just don’t realize all the work that goes into a site!
