Social Media
Introduction 1

Main message of this video: Social Media gives everyone the chance to make their own “flavor,” and then share it with whoever they please.

According to the SlideShare presentation by Marta Z. Kagan on the main Social Media page, who in turn referenced the great philosopher Wikipedia,

Social Media is:

An umbrella term that defines the various activities that integrate technology, social interaction, and the construction of words, pictures, videos and audio.

Ms. Kagan also gave a good starting list of these various types of social media, including:

• Blogs
• Micro Blogs
• Online Chat
• Widgets
• Social Networks
• Social Bookmarks
• Message Boards
• Podcasts
• Video Sharing Sites
• Photo Sharing Sites
• Virtual Worlds
• Wikis

Two statistics I found particularly interesting were that over half of active internet users have joined a social network (such as Facebook or MySpace) including 96% of millenials (of which I happen to be).  The best quote to sum this up:

“In 2008, if you’re not on a social networking site, you’re not on the Internet.”

– An Overview, April 2008

Finally, here are some steps Ms. Kagan has given to become involved in social media:

  • Listen – visit social media sites!
  • Participate – join social media sites! Remember, the SOCIAL part is what’s important!
  • Relinquish Control – “The goal is not to control the conversation”
  • Engage – make the reader feel something, love or hate!

I belong to many social media sites.  If you would like to see my activity, check out my FriendFeed.

Looking to get started in social media?  I highly recommend the following to get you on your feet:

  • Facebook – social network
  • WordPress – blogging platform
  • Twitter – mini-blogging and social tracking site
  • Picasa – Google’s photo-editing and sharing software
  • SlideShare – upload and view presentations
  • YouTube – short videos, highly entertaining, occasionally educational

Check back next Wednesday, January 21, for Episode 2!
